Cars are something that most people can’t live without. Most of us have become so dependent on our cars that it is difficult to imagine what we would do without one. However, we also all know that cars are expensive to replace and that when things go wrong, it can also cost an arm and a leg to get a car repaired. However, there are steps that you can take in order to help your car live longer and also get you the best possible price if and when you decide it’s time to sell.
1. Check your fluids and change your oil
Doing a regular inspection of your vehicle’s fluids and making sure they stay topped up to the correct level is essential to avoid unnecessary damage to your vehicle. You should also make sure that these fluids are not overfilled too.
You should also make sure that you are changing your oil about once every six months as well as your oil filter. This stops particles from building up that can harm your engine. When you have your car serviced, they will change the oil for you, so making sure your vehicle is regularly serviced is a must.
2. Check your tyres
Tyre pressure is essential when it comes to maintaining good fuel economy. Not only is it a good idea to make sure that your tyres are kept at the recommended pressure (set by the manufacturer), you should also make sure that you are regularly rotating your tyres to ensure even wear and that they are correctly aligned. This will help to increase vehicle stability, safety and tyre longevity whilst you are driving.
3. Keep it clean
It is often said that cleanliness is next to godliness, but when it comes to your car, it’s a very easy way to help extend the lifespan of your vehicle. There are all sorts of pollutants and corrosives that come into contact with our vehicles every day, and though the paintwork does prevent a lot of it from causing damaging, there is only so much that paint or paint protection can do.
Cleaning your vehicle regularly or taking it to be professionally cleaned can help to prevent rust and corrosion from taking its toll on your car. Equally it has the advantage of making your vehicle look like new. Keeping your vehicle clean on the inside can also help with lifespan of your vehicle as corrosives can eat from the inside out as well as the outside in.
4. Your scheduled services
Though it can often seem like an unnecessary expense, scheduled services are there to help prolong the life of your vehicle and make sure that you are safe when driving on the roads. Scheduled services can help to flag up minor repairs that are needed before they become major repairs and expensive to have fixed – if they can be fixed at all.
5. Minimise short trips where possible
Though having a car makes nipping round the corner for milk much more convenient, short trips tend to cause more damage to your car than longer trips. Most engine wear occurs within the first few minutes after starting your car because it takes time for mechanical components to warm up. The more your vehicle undergoes cold starts, the more damage can be caused not only to your engine, but also to your alternator and battery. After starting your car, leaving it to run for a few minutes prior to driving can help by giving it time to warm up and get the oil circulating as well as giving the alternator time to fully recharge your battery.
6. The brakes
Your brake pads are something you should make sure that you are checking regularly. Not only are brakes essential when you want to try and stop a moving vehicle, but when brake pads become thin you can damage the brake discs and callipers - both of which are much more expensive to replace. By keeping an eye on your brake pads and getting them replaced when they start to wear out, you can save yourself unnecessary money in the long run as well as maintaining a good set of brakes.
